Most first time users in gyms and spas are confused about the sequence to follow in usage of facilities like steam bath, sauna bath, ice bath etc. There is no rule which says either steam or sauna has to be used first. Most regulars generally use sauna first, steam bath next followed by ice bath or cold shower. The sequence cycle is: HEAT COOL RELAX REPEAT.
Hydration is very important during hot sessions. Make sure you take enough fluids before and after hot sessions. Ideally 10 – 15 minutes of sessions in steam and sauna should be enough. Take a proper shower before you enter the hot zone.Once inside the sauna room wait till you break into a full body sweat before you leave. Listen to your body carefully. In case you feel dizzy or uncomfortable leave the room immediately.
After a hot sessionit is important to cool down. Take rest for 10 – 15 minutes before entering the ice bath or chill shower area. After the chill shower relax and allow your body to return to normal state. You can repeat the above cycle but only three cycles are recommended. Don’t forget to remain hydrated as you move between hot and cold areas.
In case you are enjoying your sessions in the evenings and don’t have to move in polluted environment it is better to end the day with a hot shower. This will leave your pores open and allow your skin to breath while giving you a relaxing sleep.
